Tithing (First Level Prosperity) - Part 1 [ Forward Message via Email ]
Tithing has been misunderstood by many people today including Christians because it involves money. I guess if it meant the opposite (that the Church should give money instead), people will not even talk about it but will praise the idea. This is due to the lack of understanding of God's word. I tell you something, nothing done in the name of God is lost, for God is a just rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). Money is one of the hardest topics to deal with in the Church today because many preachers have abused it and some others are ignorant of the truth of it. This message will enlighten you to understand by the help of the Holy Spirit to know what is tithing, how to tithe, why we should tithe and where to tithe.

What is tithing?
The bible makes us know tithing is 10% of our income according to the Old Testimony (Numbers 18:26) but the New Testament clearly says we need to do more than 10%.

"For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 5:20

Tithe means tenth part. If you study the New Testament, you will find out the word “tithe” was not actually talked on much; this is because the giving process to God was no more limited to 10% but more. Tithing was just a first level of prosperity, the second level of giving is sowing which will address in the next message. A good example of this was that the earlier Churches at that time sold all they had and shared it among themselves (Acts 4:34, 35). God desires us to tithe as you can read in Numbers 18:26 ("Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.") but not as a religious activity in which the Church has indulged themselves today.

"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." - Matthew 23:23

God wants us to give him our tithe with at attitude of reverence and love; this he talked on in Matthew 23:23. The scribes and Pharisees gave but never gave out of love but as a sense of duty and this Jesus Christ addressed, "... these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." Paul clearly addressed this in Hebrews 7 too.

"For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God." - Hebrews 7:19

Verse 19 of Hebrews 7 talks about the law not being able to make us perfect but the drawing near to God by seeking Him will bring us to perfection by the Holy Spirit. Abraham even tithed before the law was given to Moses, so tithing was before the law. Tithing without giving in reverence and Love to God is like pouring water into a basket. Should we tithe less than 10%? If you say you love God you will not want to give less than what the Pharisees and Scribes gave. Moreover God said we should do more than the Pharisees and Scribes did (Matt 5:20). I will say less than 10% is like not reverencing God in love but it will be like wrestling in your mind with wealth. God looks at the heart and not the deeds.

"Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed." - 1 Samuel 2:3

You might actually forget to tithe all you earn but God knows when you are trying your best to obey Him.

Some people earn not much salary and therefore say that it is too little to tithe but they don't know they are robbing God. God doesn't care about your money or how big it his but He cares about the motive of your heart and your obedience to his word. It is like the woman in the bible who gave the only coin she had and Jesus said she gave more than the rest. So why don't we just give in love and obedience to the word of God, thereby giving God authority to bless us accord to his word. God says prove me in Malachi 3.

Where do I tithe?
Tithing should be done at the place where we hear/receive God's word and worship. It should be done in the fellowship or Church we attend and get feed with the word of God. It doesn’t matter where you are, God will honor your tithe provided it is given in faith with Love. The word of God is priceless and we should not think we can purchase it.

When do I tithe?
Tithing should be done depending on the way we earn. If you get paid every week, you best tithe at least 10% of your income every week because the earlier you tithe, the earlier you reap the results of your tithing but if you get paid every month, then you should tithe at least 10% of your income every month. I know we all think tithing should only be for individuals but we should learn to tithe for our companies or businesses too, if we own one because it will give God permission to bless your company or business. Mind you, the total sum of 10% of your income in a weekly tithing for a month is the same as 10% of your income in a monthly tithing, therefore we should not think of one been more than the other. I have heard of many people that tithe once in a year but I say you can tithe yearly if you earn yearly. We can also tithe yearly if we are principled enough not to spend our earning till we pay our tithe first at the end of the year but I guess that will be nearly be impossible to do, moreover it is like keeping seeds that should have been planted for an early harvest locked up. Tithing is actually at least 10% of the first part of our earning. So when we tithe after spending 90% first and giving God the last 10% is like giving God the bottom of the pot. Tithing is Holy and it is a sign of reverence to God as the owner of your earning.

"And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD'S: it is holy unto the LORD." - Leviticus 27:30

So the essence of tithing is defended when we spend what we earn first and afterwards we start looking for 10% to presence to God; there is no reverence in that. That makes us present what is Holy as common. This is why many people never see any result when they tithe. I myself made this mistake for many years, giving to God as an obligation and not out of love till the Holy Spirit dealt with me in that area.

Why do I tithe?
Many people don't tithe and therefore get into trouble with what they buy with their unsanctified money or see their business collapsing and they keep wondering why.

"For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." - Malachi 3:6-10

Anyone that doesn’t tithe will have God's curse upon himself according to Malachi 3:9 which clearly says "Ye are cursed with a curse: ...". Serving God by not doing evil or going to Church will not help you in anyway to prosperous. The only way is beginning with tithing. You might think you are rich because you have been working hard and earning money but I tell you God has a better plan for you. What you earn now no matter how big it looks in your life is not enough. God has a better plan for you which can only be revealed when you start tithing. If you say you are rich, why can’t you give to the poor? You only have enough for yourself and not others; therefore you can’t be a blessing to others. True wealth makes a person a blessing to his generation. All the churches and Pastors in this world can't make you get wealthy to blessing except you operate in the principles of God of tithing and sowing. God will not entrust his wealth into a hand that will not give. God never changes and He will never change (Mal 3:6). Whatever God says is established. God is the only one that can give wealth without sorrow.

"The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it." Proverbs 10:22

Some people say tithing is an Old Testament doctrine but I tell you, the New Testament did even greater; they sold all they had and shared the money to all according to their needs.

"Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, Acts And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need." - Acts 4:34, 35

So I believe you will like to take 10% instead of selling all you have to distribute the money. God loves us and wants to help us to be prosperous in spirit, soul and body. God gives the power to make wealth and He wants to give us more. He can only do this if we obey Him, so let us learn to tithe so that we can remain blessed in the Lord.

What is the tithe used for?
The tithe given to God in the church is used for the building of the Church, the salaries of the workers of the Church, welfare of the Church members, missionary works and not for the amassing of wealth by anyone. If the tithe is not used for the propagation of the Gospel or helping the workers of the Church, it should be readdressed in that Church. Many Churches do not take the welfare of their members seriously and should know that should not be so. The earlier churches made sure none lacked. It is not Christ-like to leave the poor and the needy in the same state in the church. The sign of a good Church is a Church that is working in love towards all men, first to their brothers.

"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." Malachi 3:10

Once we tithe, we should not worry about what the church will do with the money because you are giving the money to God and not the Pastor. So leave the rest to God.

In Conclusion of the message, tithing is an act of worship to God and should therefore be done in that regard. We should all tithe because we love God, believe in his word and nothing else. If you do not tithe, will I go to heaven? Of course, you will; both the rich and poor that truely serve God will surely get to heaven but the only thing is that you may be poor on this earth. If a man truely loves God, he will be able to give all he has for Him if required.
