REVEALING GOD DEVOTIONAL - SPIRITUAL MATURITY STAGES
Bless God for another glorious day to be alive and to share a thought with you. Today I want to explore the topic of spiritual maturity stages because many Christians wonder why they are not growing or why God is not using them more. Understanding these stages will help you know where you are and what is expected of you in your walk with God.
Just as there are stages of growth in the natural life — baby, child, teenager, and adult — there are also clear stages in the spiritual life. God does not expect a baby Christian to behave like a mature believer, but He does expect every believer to grow from one stage to the next. The scripture says, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2). Growth is not automatic; it requires feeding on God’s Word and taking responsibility.
Here are the main stages of spiritual maturity:
1. Baby Stage (Newborn / Babe in Christ)
This is the beginning stage when a person has just been born again. Everything is new and exciting, but they still depend totally on others for spiritual nourishment. They feed mainly on the “milk” of the Word — basic truths about salvation, forgiveness, and God’s love. At this stage, they can be easily offended or tossed around by different teachings.
The Apostle Paul said, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat…” (1 Corinthians 3:1-2).
Baby Christians need care, teaching, and protection. God is patient with them, till they grow up to take heavy responsibilities.
2. Child Stage (Growing but Still Immature)
At this stage, the believer has grown beyond milk but still struggles with childish behaviors — envy, strife, selfishness, and inconsistency. They know more of the Word but often live by feelings rather than faith. They may still blame others or run from challenges instead of facing them.
The scripture warns, “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine…” (Ephesians 4:14).
Many Christians remain in this stage for years because they refuse to take responsibility or deal with little foxes in their lives.
3. Young Adult / Young Men Stage (Strong and Overcoming)
This is a strong, active stage. The believer has overcome the evil one through the Word of God. They are no longer easily defeated by temptations and can now teach others basic truths. They have strength for spiritual battles.
John wrote, “I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one” (1 John 2:14).
At this level, consistency in prayer, study of the Word, and taking responsibility become normal. They begin to produce fruit for God but not yet ready to take on the full responsibility for the maturity of others.
4. Father / Mature Stage (Reproducing and Fruitful)
This is the highest level of spiritual maturity. Mature believers are stable, full of wisdom, and focused on others. They reproduce themselves by raising new believers. They carry spiritual authority and can handle greater responsibilities and revelations from God. Their lives glorify God consistently. John said, “I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning” (1 John 2:13-14).
Fathers in the faith are not perfect, but they are dependable and deeply rooted in God. They live for God’s purpose rather than their own comfort.
The goal of every Christian is to grow into maturity. The writer of Hebrews lamented, “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God…” (Hebrews 5:12). God wants us to grow from feeding from the milk of the God’s Word to eating strong meat of God’s Word.
How do we grow through these stages?
- Feed consistently on God’s Word
- Take responsibility for your spiritual life
- Obey what you learn
- Fellowship with mature believers
- Endure trials with patience (they produce maturity — James 1:2-4)
Wherever you are today, determine to grow to the next stage. God is ready to help you. The more mature you become, the more He can trust you with greater blessings, assignments, and impact for His kingdom.
