REVEAL GOD DEVOTIONAL - DISCOVERING YOUR CALLING
A pen is created to write, a clock is created for time — and what then are you created for? Everyone is made and called for a particular purpose in life which they will need to find out, but this cannot be done without the help of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that has to lead every Christian into their calling, so we cannot just choose whatever calling we want.
The first thing the Holy Spirit does is prepare a Christian for their calling, and it is during this process that a Christian goes through sanctification of their soul. It is during this process that a Christian starts hearing and getting directions from the Holy Spirit into their calling. The Holy Spirit first told me to preach the gospel on the streets in preparation for my calling. It was a task that gave me a lot of insight and knowledge in my calling because I started to interact with people with different intellect and beliefs. Thus, I had to study harder to answer their doubts and false beliefs.
So learning to obey the Holy Spirit is the key to having a fulfilled calling. God prefers to be obeyed than for you to give Him all you have as a sacrifice (He owns everything already). There is nothing that can replace obedience to God’s direction. Abraham’s obedience to God’s instruction made God impute righteousness to him. It is what we must learn to do as we start hearing the directions of the Holy Spirit.
“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
Luke 9:23 tells us that if we must follow God we must first deny ourselves. The process of sanctification of our soul prepares us for this in order for us to take up our cross and follow Jesus Christ.
Here, “taking up your cross” refers to embracing your specific God-given calling and assignment — even when it costs you something.
It is not merely referring to the general problems or difficulties we face daily as human beings on earth.Jesus Christ’s own calling on earth was to die on the Cross for mankind, so that we may have our sins forgiven and live by His resurrection. In the same way, each of us has a unique cross — our particular assignment from God. I got my calling as I desired to enter into a new level with God. When I was instructed by the Holy Spirit to be diligent in the instruction He first told me to do — which was to preach on the streets — God revealed Himself to me and commissioned me to do what I now do.
Christians must wait for their commissioning to start their calling and not just rush into it. The commissioning time anoints a person for his calling and this gives him the gifts and the necessary grace to function in it. No man can function properly without being empowered to do what they have been called to do. Rushing to do anything for God without God’s direction means you are going ahead of God and that means you have now become the leader of yourself.
“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” (Proverbs 29:18)
Until a person knows his calling he will only be doing a general work without a specific purpose, as written in Proverbs 29:18. But when a vision or purpose is found, a person has a course and destination to reach. I pray that the Holy Spirit starts leading you into your calling today. Have a blessed day!

Dear Lord, I believe Jesus died and rose again for me. Forgive me my sins and come into my life. I confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Thank you Father for doing this for me. Reveal yourself to me today. In Jesus name, Amen.
