THE MYSTERIOUS PRAYER – PART 2
Praise God for another wonderful day to be able to share something with you. If you are reading this, then you are still amongst the living, and that is worth giving God thanks for. I want to continue on the discussion, “The Mysterious Prayer”.
I said previously that speaking in tongues is a powerful way of praying, but that many Christians have ignored it for various reasons. I also said the gift of speaking in tongues is real and available to every Christian that believes for it. Today I want to add that the benefits of speaking in tongues are so great that a Christian will be doing themselves a great disservice by ignoring it. The benefits of speaking in tongues overshadow any misunderstanding that anyone has about this gift. Actually, there are no disadvantages to having and using this gift. In fact, there are scientific proofs that people who speak in tongues are less prone to depression than those who don’t.
There was an article I read from www.nytimes.com which said researchers at the University of Pennsylvania took brain images of five women while they spoke in tongues. They found that their frontal lobes — the thinking, willful part of the brain through which people control what they do — were relatively quiet or inactive, as were the language centers. This means that the part of the brain that controls speaking was not active while they were speaking in tongues, but the regions involved in maintaining self-consciousness were still active. The women were not in a blind trance. It was unclear scientifically which region was driving the behavior. In other words, it was scientifically proven that speaking in tongues is not a human composition of sounds, but a language empowered by the Holy Spirit. You can read the full article of this research at the URL: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/07/health/07brain.html?_r=0.
Now, let me tell you some of the importance of speaking in tongues, so that you can know what you are missing when you are not speaking in tongues.
1. Faith
Speaking in tongues helps you to pray a faith-based prayer because doubts cannot be introduced into a prayer that your mind does not understand. When you speak in tongues, the scripture says you speak mysteries that your mind can’t understand, but God understands it and that is what really matters. Moreover, the devil has no clue about what you are praying about, so he cannot introduce doubt or hinder such a prayer. The scripture says, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries” (1 Corinthians 14:2).
2. Mysteries
Mysteries are secrets. There are many things as Christians that we might not have understanding about or even know of, because in this dark world there are many things going on that you can’t imagine. But through speaking in tongues, these mysteries can be tackled by the help of the Holy Spirit. There was a group of Christians that stopped in a hotel to rest and pray. They were all speaking in tongues for a while. During that time, a person in the next room was planning to commit suicide, but she had to stop what she was about to do because of their prayer. She then went to the room where the group of Christians were praying and knocked. They stopped praying and opened the door. This lady started to tell them her testimony. She said she was about to hang herself, but as they started praying in tongues, she heard them talking to her in her native language that she should not kill herself and that God loves her. That was why she stopped and came.
We see that those who were speaking in tongues didn’t know that their prayer was mysteriously an answer to someone’s need. The Holy Spirit can use the prayer of someone speaking in tongues to pray for other things that we might not know, but God knows. The truth is that if God opened our eyes to see all the needs of others and ourselves that we should pray about, they would be endless. But when we pray in tongues, that is resolved because God helps us by His Holy Spirit. The best thing to do when you are confused about anything is to pray in tongues. The scripture says, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26).
3. Power
It is interesting to know that God told His disciples that they would be endowed with power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them (Luke 24:49). And when the Holy Spirit came, the scripture said that the disciples spoke in tongues (Acts 2). So we see three key words interwoven: Holy Spirit, Power, and Tongues. In other words, speaking in tongues produces divine power because it engages the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Throughout the scriptures, you will notice that speaking in tongues was a sign that a Christian had received the Holy Spirit into their lives (Acts 2:1-4, 10:44-46, 19:1-6). The Holy Spirit is not the power, but you can’t imagine having God in you and not carrying His power. The Holy Spirit is God in us.
Practically speaking, I have had experiences in which while speaking in tongues, demonic spirits in people were manifesting because there was power flowing through me while I was praying. The more we speak in tongues, the more we get charged up and release more of God’s power. Many times we might need to charge ourselves by speaking in tongues for a while to fully get charged up.
4. Edification
To edify means to build up; it also means encouragement. When we speak in tongues, we grow faster as Christians because we exercise our spirit man. We know even from the physical that a person who exercises builds up his physical muscles. Speaking in tongues builds up our spiritual muscles, cuts off any weight that might hinder us from growing as Christians, and also mortifies the body. The scripture says, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself” (1 Corinthians 14:4).
5. Spiritual Sensitivity
After several hours of speaking in tongues one day, I slept and had a dream. I saw two men shooting at me with guns, but I noticed that I was 100 times faster than the bullets they shot. To demonstrate how fast I was in the dream, I ran to meet the men that shot the bullets twice and back, and the bullet had not yet gotten to me. This was because my spirit man was charged up, making me more sensitive to the things of the Spirit. I have had other experiences that have made me undoubtedly believe that speaking in tongues makes you spiritually alert. The scripture says, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost” (Jude 1:20).
There are many other advantages of speaking in tongues, but I am sure those I have been able to share with you will encourage you to seek this gift. So I end with this question: Would you want God to pray for you or you want to pray for yourself? Speaking in tongues is God praying for you through you.
You can speak in tongues right now if you are already born again, because the only criteria for receiving the gift of speaking in tongues is to be born again and to have faith. So if you are already born again, then pray the prayer below in faith and start giving thanks that you have received it, because the scripture says, “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13).
Prayer for the Gift of Speaking in Tongues:
Dear Lord, Your word says that if I ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit, You will give it to me. I ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit so that I can speak in tongues, and I believe I receive it right now. Thank you Father for giving me this gift. Help me make it manifest. In Jesus name, Amen.
Today’s Reading:
Acts 10, 19, Proverbs 5---
Nevertheless, if you are not born again you can do so today by saying this simple prayer below out with your mouth in faith, believing that Jesus Christ died and rose again for your sins.
Prayer for Salvation
Dear Lord, I believe Jesus died and rose again for me. Forgive me my sins and come into my life. I confess Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Thank you Father for doing this for me. Reveal yourself to me today. In Jesus name, Amen.
Congrats, your status has changed to that of a child of God, if you said this prayer in faith.
