Revealing God Devotional - LED BY THE SPIRIT – PART 1

Yet again, it is another wonderful day! I hope you had a good night’s rest? Today, I want to talk about the Holy Spirit and how God has sent Him to lead us. In this dark world where no one knows tomorrow, we need to know the next step to take through the eyes of someone that knows tomorrow. That is why we need the help of the Holy Spirit. I tell you the truth, it is better for someone who knows tomorrow to lead you than someone who doesn’t. Letting a person who only knows the past lead you is no different from letting a blind man lead you to cross a busy road. The scripture says, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come” (John 16:13).

The problem is that many of us have heard about the term “The Holy Spirit”, but do not really know what it is or who He is. Many people think of Him in various forms. For example, some think of Him as the wind and fire that came down on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2). Some others think of Him as the dove that descended on Jesus Christ during His water baptism (Matthew 3). And some even think of Him as just the power of God. With all these different ideas about the Holy Spirit, it will be hard to be led by Him. Because if you must be led by someone, you must see him as a living person. You can’t expect your car to drive you without giving it direction — you tell your car where you want to go or drive your car where you want to go because it is not a living thing and cannot think for itself without your input. No one will prefer to interact with a car than with a person. This is why this is one of the most important hurdles to overcome if you must be consciously led by the Holy Spirit.

Let me quickly help you see from the scriptures that the Holy Spirit is a living person and not what people might think about Him. First, from the scripture I quoted in John 16:13, we see certain attributes of the Holy Spirit:

- He sees because He can guide — that means He has eyes.

- He hears — that means He has ears.

- He speaks — that means He has a mouth.

- He moves as well, because Jesus said He shall come — that means He has legs.

Now if you paint a picture of all these things, you will surely have an image of a person.

Jesus said that if you blaspheme against Him it can be forgiven, but if you blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, it is a sin that cannot be forgiven on earth or in heaven. This tells us two things. Firstly, Jesus compared the Holy Spirit with Himself — He wouldn’t have done that if He didn’t see the Holy Spirit as a person. You certainly won’t compare yourself with a dove when it comes to serious business! Secondly, Jesus showed that the Holy Spirit is of great honour in the Kingdom of God and someone that should be revered. The scripture says, “And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven” (Luke 12:10).

When we also look into the scriptures that many people base their assumption of the Holy Spirit as a dove, we see that the scriptures did not directly call the Holy Spirit a dove but said “descending like a dove.” “Like a dove” and “is a dove” are two different things. In fact, when we read a little more into the account in Matthew, we will see that the Holy Spirit was described as having a countenance of lightning. This shows the gentleness of the Holy Spirit, yet the power He possesses. The scripture says, “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him” (Matthew 3:16).

Nevertheless, when the Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost, His descent was not gentle like a dove. This time He came down with a sound like a rushing mighty wind and filled the disciples. His countenance was manifested like cloven tongues of fire on their heads. The scripture says, “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” (Acts 2:2-4).

We can only conclude one thing: the Holy Spirit is a person who is gentle, yet has great power. He is just as Jesus was a guide to His twelve disciples to the Church. He is always with us, and we can feel His presence sometimes like cool refreshing air, especially when two or more Christians are gathered in the name of Jesus.

Now that this truth is established, next time we will continue to talk about how the Holy Spirit leads Christians, because it is very important that He leads us if we must be fulfilled in life. So have a blessed day!
