REVEALING GOD DEVOTIONAL - THE LIVING SACRIFICE

Praise God for another glorious day to share with you something that I have been meditating on. This I titled “The Living Sacrifice”. For you to better understand what I am about to discuss with you, I would like to define sacrifice. A sacrifice can be defined as something offered in death for a reason — that is, for worship.

From the definition of sacrifice, you can then understand that when we are talking about a living sacrifice, we are talking about something that has died to every other thing but is living for just one purpose. A sacrifice always comes with losses and pain in order to please another.

Now as Christians, we require this principle to live Christianity as we should, because in life there will be several seemingly easier and more profitable options than following God’s Word. It is our ability to see through the façade of what really is not important is what will determine if we will make the right decision. If we try to opt for the things that please us but not God, we will eventually lose in both ways — we will lose all we have gained on the earth and we will lose entering into eternal life. I wish there is another easier way to be a follower of God, but there is none other than the way of sacrifice. The scripture says, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 16:24-25).

When we look into the scriptures, we will see that right from the beginning of creation, sacrifice has always been something God delights in, but not every sacrifice pleases God. We have the story of Cain and Abel, in which they both offered sacrifices but only Abel’s sacrifice was accepted. This was because Abel’s sacrifice was the best he could give: he gave the fattest of the firstlings of his flock as a sacrifice, but Cain just gave without considering these things. The difference between their sacrifices was that one gave his best. What moves God in a sacrifice is not the size of the sacrifice, but the state of the heart with which we give it. And of course, when you give with the right state of heart, you will certainly give your best. The scripture says, “And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering” (Genesis 4:4).

Whatever you give to God that does not cost you anything is not a sacrifice to God. In other words, the more painful the sacrifice we offer, the more we get God’s attention. Solomon gave his best on two different occasions, and in those two times, he had a divine visitation from God. Also in the New Testament, Cornelius, a man that was not born again, was giving with all his heart to God, and that moved God to bring salvation to his home (Acts 10). Your best sacrifice will always move God, but if your sacrifice does not move you, it cannot move God.

As Christians, the greatest sacrifice we can give to God is ourselves, because in giving yourself to God, you have also given all you have. This is why we must understand that Jesus giving Himself as a sacrifice for us on the cross is equal to Him giving all that God has to us. The scripture says, “Greater love has no man than this, that a man gives up his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

It is our duty as Christians to consciously present our bodies as a sacrifice to God, because that pleases God. The scripture says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1).

You might then ask, how do you give yourself as a sacrifice? You can give yourself as a living sacrifice when you choose to surrender all you are — in thought, word, and deed — and all you have to God, and you are willing to obey Him no matter the cost. Singing songs of worship from our heart is a good way to start offering sacrifices to God with our words. This will cost you nothing but your time and words. The scripture says, “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him” (John 4:23).

So you can begin to offer sacrifices today, and I believe God will guide you into more ways to offer Him more pleasing sacrifices. Have a blessed day!
