REVEALING GOD DEVOTIONAL - THE LOVE OF GOD

Praise God for another glorious day to discuss with you. Today, I want us to see another dimension of God, because I don’t want anyone to misunderstand the character of God as one that is always ready to judge people for every mistake they make.

The fact is that most people see God in one of two extreme ways. Some see Him as a loving Father who will always overlook sin once one is born again. Others see Him as a severe God who is always ready to judge anyone for every mistake they make. But the truth is that there is a balance between God’s love and His severity. God is a very severe God, but at the same time He is absolute love.

God called Israel the apple of His eye and destroyed many nations because of them as a proof of His love. He also delivered them from their oppressors by many great signs and wonders. But when they turned away from serving Him and refused to repent, He cut them off for a season and gave the gospel to the Gentiles. So the Gentiles (or Non-Jews) must not take His love for granted either. The scripture says, “Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off” (Romans 11:20-22).

God has provided all we will ever need to serve Him through His Son, Jesus Christ, because He knows we cannot survive the Christian journey on our own. The scripture tells us that because God so loved the world, He gave His Son, Jesus, as a sacrifice to save us (John 3:16). There is no greater way to show love than when someone gives His life to save another person. That is just the simple truth. Anyone who is willing to give his life to save another is also willing to give anything he owns to that person. The scripture says, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

One of the greatest attributes of love is giving. You can’t just say you love someone verbally and not be willing to give them what they need. The scripture says, “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18).

In fact, if you have ever fallen in love before, you would remember how you were willing to give your partner whatever they wanted just to make them happy. I am talking about true love, not the kind of selfish love that is now so common in our society, which is a kind of love that always wants something in return. I am talking here of genuine love. My point in saying all this is to help you see that if human beings can love in this way, how much more God, who does not just have love but is love Himself.

God’s kind of love is called “Agape” in Greek, because it is a kind of love that does not need anything in return. It loves because He chooses to love. To get a better understanding of this, think of the father-to-son bond, where the only reason there will always be love is because of the blood link. God is your Father, and He will always love you no matter what you do, even though it grieves Him when you choose the wrong path. The prodigal son was always loved by his father, even when he chose the wrong path and reaped its consequences (Luke 15).

Many Christians allow themselves to be beaten by the devil when he lies to them that God does not love them because they just made a mistake. They then fall into self-condemnation, which makes their relationship with God grow even farther apart.

I have had my fair share of these lies, which always hindered my relationship with God. That is why I want you to understand this technique of the devil. My advice is to genuinely confess your sins, repent, and ask for God’s grace to overcome any weaknesses. Then believe God has forgiven you according to His Word (1 John 1:9) and throw away any feeling of condemnation because it is not from God.

Nevertheless, the love of God does not change His holiness. God will not break His own commandments because He loves you, or else He would be partial.

Moreover, there is a difference between the forgiveness of sin and the consequences of sin. Even though God forgave Adam, the consequences of his sin still linger till today. We also see this when God forgave David for killing Uriah and taking his wife — David still reaped the consequences of his actions. So sometimes God can forgive a sin, but the consequences may still occur. That is why the scripture says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

For us to escape all this, God provided His grace to empower us to overcome our weaknesses, His Word to show us the truth, and the Holy Spirit to teach, guide and help us. So why is God making all this available? He is doing so that we can overcome sin and live for Him, in order to escape the day of His wrath. The judgment day is not going to be a funny day, but a day of terror. The Scripture says, “the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” (Revelation 6:17).

We are in a season of grace, where God will always show us mercy so that we can have another opportunity to repent. But if we do not use the time of His mercy and grace to repent, and we are caught in our sins, then we miss out on God’s eternal salvation.

God will always forgive us our sins if we ask for forgiveness. However, but we must not die in our sins or miss the second coming of Christ while still in sin. That is why you need to keep yourself always prepared, because the scripture says, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10).

There is no repentance when you cross over to the other side of life, because then, it will be a time for judgment. And even though God loves you, He still needs to judge you with His Word. He won’t break His commandment because of you, so at that point He has to be severe. So if anyone is saying, “How can a loving God allow people to go to hell?” — it is because they choose to go there by choice — a choice of rejection of Jesus and His Word. People have the freewill to choose what they want and where they want to go in this world, but not anymore when they leave this world. That was why God did not stop Adam from sinning against Him even though He was present with them. God respects your will and will always allow you to choose what you want. He will only advise and help if you want His help. That is why the scripture says, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

There are also other times when God’s love can cause Him to punish us so that we can repent, because it is better for God to punish us on earth and we repent than for Him to do nothing and allow us continue in our evil ways till we end in eternal destruction (That will be no one's portion by the grace of God). In the same way, parents punish their children even when they love them — so that their children can be better people in the future. The scripture says, “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons” (Hebrews 12:6-8).

God loves because He is love, but He is severe because He is holy. So let us learn to keep ourselves in the love of God, as the scripture says, “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 1:21).

I really think it is only by God’s mercy we can make it into the kingdom of God, and not by what we do. But we have to act like someone who seeks that mercy by embracing His love and responding back to it by obeying Him. Have a blessed day.
