PURE IN HEART – 6

Purification by Obedience

Praise God for another day to share a thought with you. Today, we want to talk about how obedience brings purification.

Obedience starts with faith. However, faith is not faith if it does not have any scriptural backing. Faith must stand on the Word of God to be absolutely effective. Furthermore, if our faith does not translate into actions, then it is not truly faith, because faith without evidence or works is dead (James 2:20). Faith must have proof.

As I mentioned earlier, when we act without faith, we might fall into sin, which defiles our purity because the Scripture clearly says that “whatsoever is not of faith is sin” (Romans 14:23). However, if we act in faith, then our actions will tend toward the purification of our soul. The Scripture says, “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently” (1 Peter 1:22).

One of the most important reasons we need the help of the Holy Spirit as Christians is that simply reading the Word of God on our own is not a guarantee for its proper application. It requires the help of the Holy Spirit for you to know when and how to apply it. Thus, we will always need His guidance. When a Christian receives instruction by the Spirit of God, whether through revelation, a dream, a vision, prophecy, or the inner witness, obeying it aligns them with God and keeps them on the path of purity. Therefore, we must form a habit of waiting to hear from God through His Holy Spirit before we take action. This is the most crucial key to daily victory in this dark world.

Adam and Eve were defiled by disobeying a divine instruction. Consequently, as long as we disobey divine instructions, we are bound to defile our souls. If this continues, it will cause a person to become increasingly separated from God until they can no longer hear or receive instructions from Him. The Scripture says, “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2). It also says, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded” (James 4:8).

Moreover, the effects of our ignorance as Christians will not always be overlooked, nor will ignorance serve as an excuse to exempt us from suffering consequences when we disobey God’s instructions. The fact that a person mistakenly drinks alcohol thinking it is a soft drink does not mean they will not end up drunk. The devil does not play a fair game, and one of the ways he plays unfairly is by keeping Christians ignorant of the truth. The Scripture says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children” (Hosea 4:6). We must actively seek after the truth if we are to be free from ignorance.

However, the first step of purification is to be born again, because being born again replaces our spirit man and prepares it for the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, who helps us in the sanctification of our soul and body. Therefore, if you are not born again, I advise you to do so today, as it is very simple. Jesus has already done the hard part by giving His life as a sacrifice for our sins. All you need to do is believe in His finished work and ask Him for the gift that comes along with it—the gift of eternal life. You can say this prayer of salvation in faith:
