REVEALING GOD DEVOTIONAL DAY 2 – ASSUMPTION OF FAITH Scripture Readings: Luke 1:26-35, Genesis 16:1-4, Genesis 17:1-22 After Elizabeth was visited by God and she was already six (6) months pregnant, an angel was sent to an unknown lady in Israel, whose name was Mary. Mary was a virgin, engaged to man called Joseph, who was also an Israelite. When the Angel saw her, he told her that she will become pregnant with a child, who shall be called JESUS. I can imagine some of the thoughts that was going through her mind: thoughts like “How will I get pregnant since I am a virgin? Which man will get me pregnant? Will it be Joseph, my husband to be?”. However, she did not leave these questions to her assumption. So, she asked the angel, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” (Luke 1:34). The angel answered and told her, this will not happen by the natural but the power of the Holy Spirit. Can you imagine if she had assumed and gone after the natural? This would have aborted the Will of God concerning her. Assumption has been one of the great mistakes that has made faith not to work for many. It is common for Christians to hear the promises of God, and through assumption try to fulfill it by their own understanding and strength, rather than total dependency on God and His power. Abraham, a man of faith as we know it, also fell a victim of assumption. God made a promise to him that he was going to be a father of many nations, but yet his wife was barren. After about ten years of not seeing the promise of God come to pass, his wife made a suggestion that he thought was the answer to God’s promise – to marry his maid, an Egyptian called Hagar. So, Abraham married Hagar, and got her pregnant with a child called Ishmael. Abraham continued to assume that Ishmael was the promised child for another fourteen (14) years until God corrected him that the promise was not to come through Ishmael, but Isaac, a child Sarah was to give birth to in her old age. Many Christians have delayed their miracle answers because they are living by assumption, and yet they blame God. Why not ask God questions, rather than living by assumption? Even though God made a promise to you, asking questions will bring more clarity on how to go about it. God only answers questions asked of Him, even though they are stupid. So, if we don’t ask questions, we will most likely be living faith by assumption, and this will never yield results. Many of the doctrines that has so much divided the Church today, are based on assumptions, but I pray that every mistake of assumption in our lives be made right. In Jesus name, Amen.
