REVEALING GOD DEVOTIONAL – MEDITATING ON THE WORD
It is another glorious day to praise God. Today, I want to share about meditation. Meditation may sound like a big or unfamiliar word to many people, but you will be surprised to know that we have all meditated on something before.
If you have ever had deep thoughts that absorbed all your concentration, caused you to mutter to yourself, and in some cases eventually influenced your decisions — that is meditation. If you have ever worried or thought deeply about how to resolve a problem, you have meditated before, though possibly in a negative way. That kind of worry can lead to depression and heart problems.
But if you channel the same effort you use to worry into meditating on God’s Word, it is far more profitable than you can ever imagine.
Scientists say it takes about 8 seconds of focused attention for something to stick in our minds, but merely memorizing something does not mean we understand it. Meditation on God’s Word is what brings true understanding and the motivation to act on it.
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)
God told Joshua that unless he meditated on His Word, he would not be able to fulfill his destiny. This shows that meditation is a very important part of the Christian walk. Here are some of its benefits:
- Meditation gives understanding
The fact that you hear or read something does not mean you truly understand it. Many times we think we understand what someone said, only to realize later that we didn’t. Even the disciples often misunderstood Jesus until after His death and resurrection. As we meditate on God’s Word, the Holy Spirit opens our hearts and minds to grasp its true meaning. Many Christians simply accept what they hear from the pulpit without personal meditation, making them vulnerable to false doctrine. The Berean Christians were commended because they went back and examined the Scriptures to verify what Paul taught them.
- Meditation gives quick discernment
There are times we know the right thing to do but fail to act when the moment comes. Our spiritual reflexes are weak. Regular meditation sharpens our spiritual sensitivity so we can respond correctly and quickly when situations arise.
- Meditation gives spiritual strength
Spiritual strength is different from physical strength. A physically strong person may still lack the power to say “No” to sin. God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous, and the key He gave him was meditation on the Word of God (Joshua 1).
- Meditation produces faith and the desire to obey.
How to Meditate on God’s Word:
- Read the Scriptures or listen to Audio Bibles.
-Memorize verses.
- Create dedicated time — The quality of time you spend meditating determines the depth of understanding and strength you receive.
- Focus on a particular topic or verse at a time. Meditating on many things at once is like being a jack of all trades and master of none. Give one passage time to sink in fully.
- Meditate in a quiet atmosphere when possible. You concentrate better in quiet environments. However, if you cannot find a quiet place, speak the verse or passage out loud to yourself. You will still hear it clearly even in noise. Remember, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).
I believe you have been blessed by this. Have a wonderful day, and please share this with someone.
