How to Grow the Word of God

The Word of God is the foundation for spiritual growth, producing life, love, and blessings when sown in a good heart. However, the devil seeks to corrupt this seed to prevent it from bearing fruit, leading to spiritual barrenness. As Jesus teaches in Matthew 7:17-21 (KJV), "Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." This underscores the principle that only a heart rooted in God's Word can yield godly results, while a corrupted heart produces nothing of eternal value.

The Word as Spiritual Sustenance

Jesus likens the Word of God to food, essential for sustaining spiritual life. In Matthew 4:4 (KJV), He declares, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Just as physical food nourishes the body, the Word nourishes the soul. To grow spiritually, we must seek it diligently, as 1 Peter 2:2 (KJV) exhorts: "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby." This earnest desire drives us to immerse ourselves in Scripture, allowing it to transform us.

The Fruits of the Word

When the Word is sown in a receptive heart, it produces abundant fruit:

Life: Proverbs 3:1-2 (KJV) states, "My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee." Obedience to God’s Word brings vitality and peace.

Love: 1 Timothy 1:5 (KJV) teaches, "Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned." The Word cultivates genuine love rooted in faith.

Blessing: A heart anchored in Scripture reaps divine favor, as the Word aligns us with God’s will.

Sowing in a Good Heart

A good heart, one that is born again and fully trusts in God’s Word, is essential for fruitfulness. Such a heart prioritizes God’s truth over worldly lusts and cares. To cultivate this:

Remove Sin: Psalm 1:1-3 (KJV) describes the blessed man who "walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season." We must weed out sin through repentance and meditation on Scripture.

Delight in the Word: The Word is the seed (Luke 8:11). Delighting in it through regular reading and study allows it to take root and grow.

Feed on Truth: Jesus warns against traditions that nullify the Word, as in Mark 7:13 (KJV): "Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition." We must ensure we are rooted in biblical truth, not human distortions.

Exercise Patience: Spiritual growth requires time and perseverance. Just as a seed takes time to bear fruit, we must patiently abide in the Word to see its results.

Conclusion

To grow the Word of God in our lives, we must treat it as our spiritual sustenance, sow it in a heart cleansed of sin, and nurture it with faith, patience, and obedience. By doing so, we guard against the devil’s attempts to corrupt the seed and ensure it produces the fruit of life, love, and blessing, fulfilling God’s purpose for us.
